Summer Central
Summer Central is one of NEKYS’ efforts to help youth develop healthy behaviors, build positive relationships, acquire the strengths and abilities they need to make healthy decisions, and develop positive assets by taking part in drug and alcohol free skill building workshops and programs.
Not only do youth experience all the fun that goes along with summer, they also learn how to work together, build on independence, and increase their self-worth.
The centerpiece of the program is the Summer Central Calendar, which is a comprehensive listing of events, camping adventures, sports workshops, classes, and special activities available to youth in Caledonia and Essex Counties.
Youth attend programs at Powers Park, St. Johnsbury Academy Recreation Dept., UVM Extension, Lyndon State College, Triple Threat Hoop Camp, North Woods Stewardship Center, an array of day camps, and much more.
“My mom is sick a lot so I don’t get out much. Going to camp was so much fun and I could be with some of my friends from school.” - camper
Scholarships are based on a family’s ability to pay and are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. NEKYS distributes scholarship money to applicants to pay for summer activity tuitions, program costs, etc. These scholarships make it possible for local youth to participate in activities they otherwise would not be able to afford.
“I had a great time at camp. I got to do archery and fishing thanks to you. Thank you so much for the scholarship. I wouldn’t have got to go to this camp without a scholarship.” - camper
