Youth Development Program
Youth Development Program (YDP) provides transition support to any youth between 15 and 22 who is or has been in Department for Children and Families care. Teens in foster care can get involved with leadership opportunities for local and statewide level; they can learn life skills and receive one-on-one support in identifying and achieving their own goals. Whether they’re interested in college courses, trade apprenticeships, or job search and interviewing skills, YDP provides individualized support and encouragement. Youth who aged out of foster care are eligible for continued Department for Children and Families financial support until age 22 as they attend school, learn job skills and transition to successful adulthood. Life skills training includes topics such as: decision making, budgeting and household management, healthy relationships, employment skills, leisure activities, self esteem, community resources, apartment hunting, social skills, and education options. The YDP participants set their own goals, collaborate in forming a transition plan, and then take the steps necessary to achieve their dreams. YDP coordinates services between key players, including schools, foster parents, Vocational Rehabilitation, the Department of Labor, VSAC, training programs and others to make sure YDP participants know all their options and set goals for fulfilling self sufficiency.
